Local SEO Checklist for Ottawa Service Businesses

46% of all Google searches have local intent. When someone in Ottawa searches “plumber near me” or “best HVAC company Ottawa,” Google decides who shows up in the Map Pack, and who gets buried on page two. This local SEO checklist is the exact process we use for PeakSpire’s local SEO clients. Want us to run this checklist on your site? Start with a free audit.

Whether you are an HVAC contractor, landscaper, electrician, or cleaning company, if you serve Ottawa customers and want your phone to ring more, this is the checklist.

How Google Decides Who Ranks Locally

Before the checklist, you need to understand what Google actually weighs. We wrote a complete breakdown of how Google ranks Ottawa businesses that covers all six signal categories. According to the 2024 BrightLocal Local Search Ranking Factors study, the top signals for the Map Pack are:

Pie chart showing Google Map Pack ranking factors: GBP signals 32 percent, on-page signals 19 percent, reviews 16 percent, links 11 percent, citations 7 percent, behavioral 7 percent, personalization 8 percent

The 12-Step Local SEO Checklist

1. Claim and Verify Your Google Business Profile

If you have not claimed your GBP, you are invisible in the Map Pack. Go to business.google.com, verify your business, and make sure the listing is under your control, not a former employee’s or a third-party aggregator’s. This is step zero.

2. Complete Every GBP Field

Google rewards completeness. Fill out every single field: business name (exact legal name, no keyword stuffing), address, phone number, website URL, business hours, business category (primary + secondary), service area, attributes, and business description. An incomplete profile ranks lower than a complete one, every time.

3. Choose the Right Primary Category

Your primary GBP category is the strongest ranking signal in your entire local SEO stack. “Plumber” and “Plumbing service” are different categories, and the one you pick determines which searches you appear for. Research which category your top-ranking competitors use and match accordingly. You can add up to 10 secondary categories.

4. Build a Review Engine

Reviews are 16% of local ranking. More importantly, they are the first thing a potential customer looks at. You need a system, not a “please leave us a review” sign at the front desk. Send a follow-up text or email after every job with a direct link to your Google review page. Respond to every review (positive and negative) within 48 hours. Our clients average 5.0 on Google because they treat reviews as a process, not an afterthought.

5. Nail Your NAP Consistency

NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Your business info must be identical everywhere: your website, GBP, Facebook, Yelp, Yellow Pages, BBB, and every directory you are listed on. Even small differences (like “Street” vs “St.” or a missing suite number) can confuse Google and dilute your ranking signal. We found the wrong postal code on our own website during a recent audit, and we are an SEO company. NAP audits are part of every SEO engagement we do.

6. Build Local Citations

Citations are mentions of your business on other websites: directories, chamber of commerce sites, industry listings. The quantity matters less than the quality and consistency. Start with the big ones: Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Yellow Pages Canada, BBB, Facebook, and your local Chamber of Commerce. Then expand to industry-specific directories. We track 85+ directories in our local SEO work.

7. Optimize Your Website for Local Keywords

Your homepage title tag should include your city. Your service pages should target “[service] + Ottawa” or “[service] + [neighbourhood].” Your H1 tags should include your target keyword naturally. This is basic on-page SEO, but the majority of Ottawa service business websites we audit still get it wrong. A properly built website has this baked in from day one. If you need a new site, our Ottawa web design service builds SEO-ready sites from scratch. Read our guide to what actually works.

8. Add LocalBusiness Schema to Your Website

Schema markup is structured data that tells Google exactly what your business is, where it is located, what services you offer, and what your hours are. Without it, Google is guessing. With it, you are giving Google a clean data feed. We add LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema to every site we build. If your developer has not added schema, you are leaving ranking signals on the table.

9. Make Your Website Fast

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal, including for local search. We audited 86 Ottawa service business websites and the average PageSpeed score was 67 out of 100. If your site scores below 90, it is actively hurting your local rankings. A Speed Sprint fixes this in 5-7 days. Read our full Ottawa speed audit for the data.

Backlinks from other Ottawa businesses and organizations are gold for local SEO. Sponsor a local event. Join the Ottawa Board of Trade. Partner with complementary service providers (a roofer linking to a gutter company, a cleaner linking to a property manager). Guest post on local blogs. These links signal to Google that your business is established in the Ottawa community.

11. Post to GBP Weekly

Google Business Profile has a built-in posting feature. Use it. Post weekly updates: completed projects, seasonal tips, special offers, team updates. Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency matters. Each post is another signal to Google that your business is active and engaged. Include a photo with every post. Posts with images get 35% more click-throughs.

12. Track and Measure Everything

Install Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console. Track which keywords bring traffic, which pages convert, and where your phone calls come from. If you are not measuring, you are guessing. We use a custom SEO monitoring agent that tracks PageSpeed scores, keyword rankings, schema health, citation consistency, and sitemap integrity, every single day. You should at minimum check GSC weekly.

What Most Ottawa Businesses Get Wrong

After auditing dozens of Ottawa service business websites, here are the three most common local SEO mistakes we see:

  1. They set up GBP once and never touch it again. Google rewards activity. A stale profile with zero posts and three-year-old photos signals to Google that you might not even be in business anymore.
  2. They have different info on every directory. Old phone numbers, misspelled addresses, outdated business names. All of it confuses Google and fractures your ranking signal across dozens of listings.
  3. They ignore their website entirely. GBP is 32% of local ranking. On-page SEO is 19%. That means your website is almost a fifth of the equation. A slow, unoptimized site with no schema and no local keywords is working against you, not for you.

How Long Does Local SEO Take?

Honest answer: 3-6 months to see meaningful movement. Local SEO is not a one-time project. It is a system. The businesses that dominate the Map Pack in Ottawa are the ones that execute this checklist consistently, month after month. The ones that treat it as a “set and forget” activity are the ones wondering why their phone stopped ringing.

The good news: most of your competitors are not doing any of this. If you execute even half of this checklist properly, you are already ahead. Execute all of it, and you are in a position to dominate, not just compete.

Your website speed is the foundation. Your GBP is the front door. Your reviews are the reputation. Your content is the authority. Put them all together and you have a local SEO machine that brings you calls while you sleep.
